Getting Started

Each subsection of each part is titled rather literally, so this is where she discuss beginning the writing process. Again, this makes heavy use of Lamott’s style, with copious anecdotes, jokes, and humorous straight talk. Lamott’s main mission seems to be the demystification of the writing process, making it obvious for all the peoples of the world that writing creatively is not the sunshine filled adventure romantics expect.

Beyond that though, this is where Lamott establishes what she will talk about for the rest of the chapter, and what the title of each other subsection will be. Short assignment, shitty first drafts, perfectionism, school lunches, etc. Each seemingly random metaphor or off-kilter comparison gets a dedicated, funny and engaging explanation. She may describe the writing process as “your mental illnesses”, but what she produces is invariably entertaining.
